Year 6

Overview

Funds for the NFGC's sixth year were released in August 2008, for the period of performance 8/26/2008 through 9/25/2009. Funding was provided per the FY'07 Defense Appropriation.

During the sixth year, the NFGC at Moffitt continued to focus on research projects that are applicable to our mission.

We announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) on 11/30/2007 for Cycle 2 of our  Programmatic Research Grants. The top 6 projects were selected and work has begun on all.

During the FY'07 funding cycle, we were pleased to add the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute as a new affiliate to our existing group. Steve Ethier, PhD leads their project, "Oncogenomics Imaging Center (OIC)." The OIC at the Karmanos Cancer Institute is developing technology that will allow for the diagnosis of human cancer by defining oncogene signatures that characterize cancers in individual patients. In addition, the OIC is developing models of human cancers, and from these models oncogenomic signatures will be developed, validated and made available to all participating institutions within the U.S. Department of Defense National Functional Genomics Center.

Our other Affiliates, Vanderbilt Medical Center and the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center each received funding to continue their NFGC projects.

The 6th Annual Meeting of the NFGC External Advisory Board was held October 2-3, 2008, in Clearwater, FL.

We held the 2nd Moffitt Symposium on Mass Spectrometry from February 11-12, 2009, at the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Additionally, the 2nd Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting was held in Washington, D.C. February 15-17, 2009.
