Overview
Funds for year five were released in February 2007 and the Period of Performance was extended to March 31, 2009. A one-year no cost extension was granted, allowing the project to proceed to 3/31/10. Funding was provided in the FY'06 Defense Appropriation.
During year five, the NFGC continues to focus on validating the concept that molecular signatures in tumors predict cancer risk, diagnosis, prognosis, and response to therapy, and will work further to identify new molecular targets for the development of more effective cancer prevention and personalized therapeutic care.
Our Affiliates, Vanderbilt Medical Center and the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center each received funding to continue their NFGC projects. We are also continuing our collaboration with the Maui High Performance Computing Center.
Ongoing projects include Dr. Tim Yeatman's colon cancer project and Dr. Johnathan Lancaster's ovarian cancer project.
As of July 2008, all of our first round of Programmatic Research Grant projects had begun.
With funds from year five, three new projects were initiated: 1."Density Arrest Specific Markers for Early Cancer Detection", PI Jack Pledger, PhD
2."Optimization of Phospotyrosine Proteomics for Examination of Signaling Networks in Lung Cancer", PIs John Koomen, PhD and Eric Haura, MD
3. "Genome Analysis in Preclinical Mouse Cancer Models to Inform Human Studies", PI Terry Van Dyke, PhD, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill We continue to provide support to multiple core facilities at the Moffitt Research Institute. The NFGC provides funds for salaries of core staff scientists and equipment/software that benefit the research undertaken by NFGC scientists.
In April 2007, we hosted the first Moffitt Symposium on Mass Spectrometry, which was such a rousing success that we plan to make it an annual event.
